More than 100 Years of Independent, Lay-Led Journalism on Religion, Politics, and Culture

Founded in 1924, Commonweal is the oldest independent, lay-edited, Catholic journal of opinion in the US. As a bridge between the intellectual and active lives of lay Catholics, Commonweal is dedicated to fostering rigorous and reflective discussions about faith, public affairs, and the arts, centered on belief in the common good. These discussions find expression in myriad ways: through our website, podcasts, email newsletters, social media, and monthly print magazine.

Commonweal also creates forums that foster a sense of Catholic community and provide opportunities for gathering and rich exchange. Each year, we publish a Conversation Starter Series, an 8-topic digital guide that fosters thoughtful dialogue in parishes, classrooms, and beyond. We also engage with parishes, academic societies, and Catholic colleges and universities to deliver lectures, retreats, symposia, workshops, and other events.

Drawing upon a rich Catholic heritage, Commonweal is a place where people can find intellectual stimulation and spiritual nourishment. Now more than ever, Commonweal has a critically important role to play as a lay-led, Catholic voice in promoting deep inquiry, informing civil dialogue, fostering mutual understanding, and creating and expanding a shared sense of community on the most pressing issues facing our faith and our world today.
