Launched during the 2016 Global Conference on Faith and Sport at the Vatican, the Sport at the Service of Humanity (SSH) movement invites faith and sport leaders from diverse traditions worldwide to embody the motto, Live Like You Play. They recognized what leaders at US Catholic Colleges and Universities have long understood: the capacity of sport to create a bridge of common interest across lines of difference, and to act as a vehicle for spiritual growth and character development with their communities.

Now, the Sport at the Service of Humanity Foundation, with encouragement from the Dicastery of Culture and Education, has teamed up with Saint Mary’s College of California to lead a nationwide higher education Initiative. The Saint Mary’s Sport for Humanity Higher Education Initiative (SSHI) offered grants to colleges and universities who utilize the 3 Pillars (Inspiration, Inclusion, Involvement) and 6 Principles (joy, respect, balance, compassion, enlightenment, love) of the SSH Movement to create curricular, co-curricular and service programs that champion character development and care for the whole athlete.
